MILWAUKEE, WI— As efforts to make Juneteenth a national holiday continue, people in Milwaukee are having celebrations of their own. Juneteenth, held annually on June 19, celebrates the end of slavery in the United States and the date many slaves in Texas finally found out they were free.
Here's a guide to the Juneteenth 2021 events happening around Milwaukee this year:
1) Juneteenth Day Parade & Celebration - 50th Anniversary in Milwaukee

To mark its 50th anniversary, Milwaukee’s Juneteenth Day Parade and Celebration is set to take place Saturday, June 19. The parade will start at 8 a.m. from 14th and Atkinson and will travel to Burleigh and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
The 2021 Juneteenth Parade will be broadcast live on Milwaukee's TMJ4. The station is also producing historical and educational pieces to run during the 8-10 a.m. broadcast on June 19.

Join Mind, Body & Soul Dancers for an interactive Line Dance Wellness session at Nzinga Khalid live in concert. No experience necessary, instructors will teach you all of the choreography needed step by step. Participants will enjoy learning line dances to music that is specific to African culture such as: Vainglorious Juneteenth, Sankofa, Shakebody, & NaLingi. These dances will help develop an appreciation for line dance techniques, terminology, and encourage collective healing through dance. Registration required.
3) Juneteenth Genealogy With Gwen Holland

Join Juneteenth Genealogy With Gwen Holland she is a family historian from Chicago with a zeal for documenting and preserving African-American lineages. She has traced her family lineage to the sixth generation of slaves and their slaveholders.
She teaches Beginners Genealogy Classes at Fernwood United Methodist in Chicago, IL. She partnered with Dr. Williams Ebomoyi and the Chicago State University Health Science interns to document and interpret African American 1860 mortality and diseases schedules.

Join the DreamBikes group ride Milwaukee staff in a group ride to Sherman Phoenix to meet up at their Bike Your Block ride!
